Ausencio came to the U.S. planning to stay for a year, work hard, save money and go back to Mexico to enjoy a better life. He has been here for more than three years now. He paid two thousand dollars to a “coyote,” an illegal guide to cross the desert. After four months Ausencio paid back the two thousand dollars, an amount that according to him “in Mexico is way too big to fit in your head.”
